What do you get if you take four Gloucestershire football sides, one local ground and one week in July 2018? The Severn Sport Shield, that’s what.
Severn Sport are thrilled to confirm that the first annual Severn Sport Shield is coming this summer.
Gloucester City, Slimbridge, Tuffley Rovers and Longlevens will come together in the second week of July at Thornhill Park in a showcase tournament of all that we love about football in the county.
Severn Sport Head of Programming Ryan Butler heralded the success of the Severn Sport Pre-Season Tour last season as catalyst for the idea of the Severn Sport Shield.
“This season has been a landmark season for us here at Severn Sport and after the success of our Pre-Season Tour last summer, we wanted to expand and build on that.
“It has been a lot of hard work and six months in the making to get to this point and I would like to thank all at Longlevens, Tuffley Rovers, Gloucester City and of course the hosts Slimbridge for believing in the vision we have for the future of media coverage in the county.
“It was a long road to get here and we’ve experienced stumbling blocks along the way, such as originally agreeing terms with Tim Harris who was Gloucester City manager at the time. He then left and it was almost up in the air.
“We have some details to finalise including our designated charity for who we will be fundraising for throughout and to also liaise with the GFA to confirm affiliation.
“However, we felt now was the right time to announce the tournament to generate a buzz between the sides and fans. This is a tournament that we are putting on to say thank you to everyone who has supported and believed in us throughout the years. Here is to many more to come!”
The knockout style tournament will see semi-finals played on Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 July, with the 3rd/4th place play-off and the final both being played on finals day on Saturday 14 July. Kick-off times and admission prices are subject to confirmation.
Club secretary at Slimbridge Colin Gay said “Slimbridge AFC feel very honoured to have been chosen to stage the first ever Severn Sport Shield.
“We feel that the facilities we have here at Thornhill Park will do the competition proud and we can guarantee that due to the hard work of our groundsmen we will have one of the best surfaces for the competing clubs to play on.”
Mark Moore, first team manager at Longlevens, is looking ahead in anticipation of an added spice that the competitive nature of the tournament will bring.
“Hopefully as seasons go by this tournament will become a premium for local clubs to be invited to participate in” Moore said.
“It really is a great honour for Longlevens to be selected to compete alongside these other great local clubs like Gloucester City, Tuffley and Slimbridge.
“I’m personally really looking forward to the Severn Sport Shield. Sometimes friendly matches lack a competitive edge but hopefully this should bring that back and it would be great to win the whole thing!”
The winner of the Severn Sport Shield will be guaranteed a spot in next year’s tournament and a chance to defend their newly won crown.
