After yesterday’s opening day of the tipster league at Aintree it was Mr Slimbridge AFC who was leading the way, after chalking up an impressive 10 points for the day.
He would go on to have the perfect day as Slimbridge as a club took a giant step towards Southern League survival, beating Larkhall 4-2 at Thornhill Park.
Could he keep it up on day two? Let’s see how the tipsters got on.
**Quickly, both Kelsey De Maria (And The New) & the Tuffley Rovers players (Big Tips) didn’t submit tips in time so their selections were chosen by the editor.**
2.20 – Betway Top Novices’ Hurdle
1) Lalor 14/1
2) Vision des Flos 11/4
3) Bedrock 33/1
Pulled Up: Style de Garde
Non-runner: Simply The Betts
Well what an awful start that is for everyone. No one had the winner and certainly they didn’t have the third placed Bedrock, but some did select Vision des Flos – mostly to win though and some selected Style de Garde.
The only points scored were -2 points to Sweet Prince, The Bear and Mr Slimbridge AFC. The only other tipster to score anything was Bacon who had Vision des Flos to place but also had Style de Garde, meaning he scored -1 point.
Surely, things can only get better? Let’s see.
4.05 – Randox Health Topham Handicap Chase
1) Ultragold 14/1
2) Shanahan’s Turn 14/1
3) Theatre Territory 10/1
4) Kilcrea Vale 12/1
Unseated Riders (selected): Bigbadjohn, Beau Bay
Pulled Up (selected): O O Seven, Rogue Angel, Bouvreuil
Non-runner: Art Mauresque
This massive handicap was run over the Grand National fences and it was a major test for horses and jockeys alike. The race prove to be either profitable or disastrous for our tipsters. Ironically the two tipsters who didn’t submit their tips, And The New and Big Tips, avoided any minus points and scored 0 points.
For tipping one of the pulled up horses all of The Fox, Mr & Mrs Severn Sport, Always in my brother’s shadow and Mr Slimbridge AFC scored -2 points each. Unfortunately both of Sweet Prince and Big Tips saw both of their picks pull up, meaning they both scored -4 points.
It was better for Bacon and The Bear though. They both tipped Ultragold to win. Due to the price being higher than 10/1 they both scored an additional 2 points. In total the former scored 5 points whereas the latter also got an additional point for having Theatre Territory as his each way shot so scored 6 points.
With that race proving to be all or nothing for our tipsters it was all down to our last race of day two to see who would top the table going into the final day.
4.40 – Doom Bar Sefton Novices’ Hurdle
1) Santini 6/4 Fav
2) Roksana 9/1
3) Tower Bridge 8/1
Pulled Up (Selected): Sam’s Gunner, Chef des Obeaux
Non-runner: Poetic Rhythm
Capping off the worst day he has had in two years worth of tipster leagues Sweet Prince scored 0 points after his picks finished but didn’t place.
Apart from that everyone else scored points of some kind, all positive points too. No Speed No Feed and Big Tips scored 1 point each for having Roksana to place.
Everyone else had the favourite, Santini to win, but in different combinations so here goes.
The Fox, Bacon and Mr Slimbridge AFC picked up 3 points each for Santini winning whilst The Bear, And The New and Always in my brother’s shadow scored only 1 point each. This is because they had Santini to win but lost 2 points for having either Sam’s Gunner or Chef des Obeaux, who pulled up.
Mr & Mrs Severn Sport were the big winners after they had their double points boost on Santini. Even though they also had Sam’s Gunner to place, they still picked up 4 points.
Points all over the place! Hopefully you are all caught up. Here is how the table looks going into the all important third and final day at the Grand National meeting at Aintree.
We have a new leader and it’s Cheltenham Tipster League champion The Bear who takes the lead ahead of Mr Slimbridge AFC who drops back into second, with Bacon sneaking up in third only three points behind the leader. Mr & Mrs Severn Sport stay in 4th, a further 3 points behind.
After a disastrous day it appears to be all but over for tipsters at the bottom, with Big Tips, Sweet Prince and The Fox on minus points at this stage. They will be needing a miraculous comeback to take the crown but with boosts still left and the double points race of the Grand National it is still all to play for!
Tomorrow is the third and final day of the tipster league. Check back right here from 10am for day two’s tips in full.
