And now the end is near and so I face the final curtain. My friend, I’ll say it clear. I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain….today marks the fourth and final day of the Cheltenham Gold Cup Festival. For our tipsters it is one final test, one final gamble for glory.
Four races on the fourth day for our tipsters to pick the all important winners for. We added the Gold Cup as we did last year on a double points basis. However, unlike last year we aren’t ending the Tipster League with the Gold Cup race. Nope, instead we left the door wide open for our tipsters to still have a fighting chance after the big race of the week.
So, on this important day for the league just how did the Tipsters shape up?
1.30pm – JCB Triumph Hurdle
1) Farclas 9/1
2) Mr Adjudicator 8/1
3) Sayo 33/1
Faller: Stormy Island
Pulled Up: Gumball
We started with the opener. The much fancied Apple’s Shakira was tipped by all ten of our tipsters backed the favourite. The favourite came nowhere and that left the race wide open for the Elliott/Kennedy combination on Farclas to nip in and grab a big win.
The Bear, Sweet Prince, The Fox, Always in my brother’s shadow and No Speed No Feed all failed to score a point at all.
Big Tips scored 1 point for Mr Adjudicator whilst the big winners were Bacon, And The New, Mr & Mrs Severn Sport and Mr Slimbridge AFC who all scored 3 points for tipping Farclas.
The table became tighter by the horses finishing. Next we moved onto the Albert Bartlett.
2.50pm – Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle
1) Kilbricken Storm 33/1
2) Ok Corral 16/1
3) Santini 11/4 F
Pulled Up: Chef des Obeaux, Mr Whipped, Calett Mad
Another race where the favourite was disappointing. Not just that but the much fancied second favourite failed to finish. This means the scoring was heavily affected.
Mr Slimbridge AFC and The Bear failed to score a point whilst Big Tips, No Speed No Feed, Always in my brother’s shadow, Mr & Mrs Severn Sport and The Fox scored -2 points after they saw a tip fail to finish.
Both And The New and Bacon had Santini to place but Chef des Obeaux to win, meaning they both scored -1 point.
Sweet Prince had Santini to place and avoided any penalty points meaning he scored 1 point.
And now, onto the big one. The Gold Cup.
3.30pm – Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup
1) Native River 5/1
2) Might Bite 4/1 F
3) Anibale Fly 33/1
Faller: Total Recall, Bachasson
Pulled Up: Outlander, Our Duke, Saphir Du Rheu, Killultagh Vic
Due to the fact six of the ten tipsters picked Definitely Red to win, only four tipsters scored anything other than zero.
Big Tips scored -2 points after Killultagh Vic pulled up. Both The Bear and Sweet Prince went blow for blow as they had Might Bite to win. They scored 2 points each for the favourite placing.
The big winners of the race were Always in my brother’s shadow who picked Native River to win, meaning they scored a whopping 6 points.
That result left the door wide open in the final race of the Tipster League with as many as five tipsters still in the hunt for the crown.
4.10- St James’s Place Foxhunters Challenge Cup
1) Pacha Du Polder 25/1
2) Top Wood 50/1
3) Cousin Pete 66/1
3) Barrel Of Laughs 14/1
Faller: Saddler’s Encore
Pulled Up: Foxrock, Shantou Magic, Wonderful Charm
Another difficult race, another result that saw the majority of our tipsters failing to score any points at all. In fact, all of the eyes were firmly focused on the fallers and those who failed to finish.
Sweet Prince, The Fox, Bacon, And The New, Always in my brother’s shadow and Big Tips all scored -2 points for tipping either Foxrock or Wonderful Charm, whilst Mr & Mrs Severn Sport tipped both meaning they scored -4 points.
No Speed No Feed, The Bear and Mr Slimbridge AFC all failed to score.
So, a day where our tipsters struggled to gain any points. A tight and cagey affair but it is settled. Let’s see how the final table looks.
Once again The Bear takes the crown. By failing to score in all three of the main races today whilst others saw horses fail to finish he was able to hit the front and hold on to win the tipster league for the second time out of four. Sweet Prince and debutants Always in my brother’s shadow and No Speed No Feed ran him close, with all three finishing on double digits to make up our top four.
After a promising start to the week And The New finishes mid table in 5th, despite picking a massive six winners. The Fox and Bacon went stride for stride and both finished on seven points. Fellow debutants Big Tips and Mr Slimbridge AFC were heavily hampered by penalty points in a harsh first entry in the tipster league. A bad end to the week sees Mr & Mrs Severn Sport finish bottom on just two points.
And that wraps up the Tipster League for another Cheltenham Festival. We had thrills. We had spills. We had excitement and we had a plethora of winners throughout the week. Aintree awaits us in just three weeks for the Grand National meeting…..fancy a rematch?
