West Football round-up – Saturday 10 February 2018

There were goals in abundance across the West this weekend, with some big statements made from our teams at both ends of their respective league tables .

In our featured game of the afternoon, Longlevens went to Abingdon United and had the better of the game but couldn’t put away their chances and a last minute goal added gloss to Abingdon’s three points in a match that neither side really deserved to lose.

Cheltenham Town got back to winning ways as a hat-trick from Mo Eisa saw the Robins put five past a poor Port Vale side.

Gloucester City travelled East to face play-off hunting Welling United on a hunt of their own: to avenge their defeat at the Jubilee Stadium earlier in the season and drag themselves out of the relegation zone.

The Tigers took the lead three times in the game and, for once, got the result their performance deserved to get out of the drop zone in the National League South.

Ben Whitehead was firing on all cylinders for Cirencester Town as they kept up with the play-off pack with a comprehensive win over post-season rivals Evesham United, but the gap to the top five is still six points.

Back in the Hellenic Premier and Thatcham Town continued their assault on the league title as they made it a remarkable 23 wins in a row, defeating Brimscombe & Thrupp.

Games for Forest Green Rovers, Cinderford Town, Bishop’s Cleeve, Slimbridge, Tuffley Rovers, Lydney Town and Fairford Town were postponed with the rearranged dates to be announced in due course.

In the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division One, there was a big result for Longlevens Reserves with a win over Chalford, FC Barometrics enhanced their title chances over Quedgeley Wanderers, Tuffley Rovers Reserves won on the road at Leonard Stanley and there was a six goal thriller at Stroud Harriers vs Brockworth Albion.

Only two games survived the weather in Division Two, but it was a big win for Welland as they went top with victory over Bredon and there was a Desmond at Whaddon United, as they missed the chance to go top themselves by drawing at home to Lydbrook.

The Gloucestershire County League also only saw two games survive the rain but what a couplet of games they were! First played second as Lebeq United couldn’t close the gap on leaders Thornbury Town, losing at home to their title rivals.

Meanwhile, a goal fest befell Pen Park Sports Pavillion as Gala Wilton picked up a big win over Rockleaze Rangers – a result that saw them crowned the Severn Sport Team of the Day on Twitter.
