We are sat here catching our breaths after a fast and furious second day at the Grand National Festival at Aintree. And what a day it was! It was a day that saw the tipster league turned on its head and saw all of the Severn Sport Tipsters suffer at the hands of the penalty points for fallers and horses who failed to finish. But some were affected more than others, let’s have a look at the day race by race.
The tips were in bright and early and all ran bar the reserve for three of our competitors in Moulin A Vent in the 4:05pm race. This meant that we were nearly all fighting fit and were eagerly anticipating Ladies’ Day at Aintree.
3:25pm – JLT Melling Chase
1) Fox Norton (4/1)
2) Sub Lieutenant (10/3 F)
3) Traffic Fluide (14/1)
Well. Everybody picked Fox Norton to either win or place meaning they scored the full 3 points. The only exceptions were The Press Officer who only scored 1 point for Sub Lieutenant, who finished second. There were 4 points for Bacon who had the reversed forecast whilst both The Bear and Mr & Mrs Severn Sport had the straight forecast, thus scoring the full 5 points. After the first race of the day the leader was still newcomer Square Leg.
4:05pm – Randox Health Topham Handicap Chase
1) Ultragold (50/1)
2) Katnap (22/1)
3) Portrait King (66/1)
4) OO Seven 12/1
This race gave our tipsters the opportunity to score some much needed place points as we accepted the first 4 places as per the Racing Post and Sporting Life official racecards. Unfortunately for our tipsters all of Gold Present (fell), Quite By Chance and Eastlake (pulled up) failed to finish the race meaning they all scored -2 points in penalty points, all except The Gee Gee Girls who scored 0 points. In fact the only tipsters to score any points were Bacon and On Blast who both scored 1 point for OO Seven who placed.
4:40pm – Doom Bar Sefton Novices’ Hurdle
1) The World’s End (3/1)
2) Beyond Conceit (9/1)
3) Debece (11/1)
Firstly there were further bonus points to be taken into consideration as both West Approach and Monbeg Charmer pulled up before the end meaning there were -2 points once again for the following tipsters: On The Outside, The Press Officer, The Fox, The Gee Gee Girls as well as Mr & Mrs Severn Sport. Both On Blast and The Bear scored 1 point for Beyond Conceit, where as Bacon scored the same for picking Debece. The only big scorers in the race were Square Leg who picked The World’s End to win and Sweet Prince who scored 4 points thanks to another reversed forecast.
The day of bonus points leaves us shaped up nicely for day three, but before that here is how the Severn Sport Tipster League looks after day two:
As you can see the surprise yet comfortable leader is Square Leg but as Cheltenham taught us three weeks ago, anything can happen on the final day. There is a plethora of points to play for tomorrow as the tipsters pick selections for three races throughout the day and the big one, the Grand National.
We can now reveal that similarly to the Gold Cup race we are offering extra points for successfully picking the winner and as we all know, the National is a difficult race to predict so there will be 10 points awarded as standard for successfully picking the winner. So maybe, just maybe it isn’t all over just yet!
