On May 8th, a joint venture between Southern League South & West Division club Slimbridge AFC and the Slimbridge Youth Team Organisation will see the first staging of the ‘Slimbridge Festival Of Football’ tournament at Thornhill Park, aimed at 6 age groups, (U10, U11, U13, U14, U15 & U16)
Ten teams from each age group will be divided into two leagues with the first and second place team in each league making the semi-final and then the final. Each team will have at least 4 games with the finalist having 6.
The tournament will be officiated by qualified FA coaches and referees following FA guidelines. Parking is available next to the ground. Each age group will be competitive with the winners receiving a trophy. As a Southern League venue, Thornhill Park, formerly known as Wisloe Road, boasts excellent facilities including hot and cold food, refreshments, and bar. A bouncy castle and other side stalls will be open for families to enjoy.
SAFC Spokesman Tim Blake said ‘We are delighted to join with the Youth Setup for what should be a fantastic day of football, which all the family will be able to enjoy. Although we are still in the early stages of planning, we are already delighted with the response to this initiative, and hope that we can provide a top tournament for everyone.’
Speaking for the Youth teams, Dave Morgan added ‘ This is a great opportunity for both organisations to come together and create a Slimbridge Community event. We want to offer our kids a development opportunity and to feel part of the ‘Slimbridge family’. Our ultimate aim is to make the Youth team the club of choice for all the right reasons in the local community, and for the boys to feel that they want to play for the Adult side as they develop and grow through the age groups. ‘
Team are now registering for the tournament on a first come first served basis, with a £30 Entry per team. Clubs wishing to participate are asked to contact Youth Team Secretary Emma Bond (firstname.lastname@example.org ) or Chairperson Linda Morgan (07771 547812).§
