Cirencester were left frustrated after a resilient performance from Cambridge City earned them a 1-1 draw at the Corinium Stadium.
Ross Langworthy almost gave Brian Hughes’s side an early lead but his chipped effort was headed off the line, before City’s first real chance fell to Adam Murray, but he could only convert an awkward header wide. After being told he will be released by Cheltenham at the end of the season, Zack Kotwica was determined to prove his worth, showing flashes of his talent down the right wing. Josh Dawkin was Cambridge’s only real spark with his intent and presence encouraging the Lillywhites, and he directed a powerful shot wide. But chances were difficult to come by in the first 45 minutes, as Zac Barrett denied Ellis Dunton with a save from point-blank range, with the wind playing it’s role in a somewhat subdued and lacklustre first half. . The second half started much more brightly, and the Centurions took an early lead when a Langworthy cross found young Ollie Knight, who scored past Barratt with a calm and composed finish in the 49th minute. . His assist creator could have got on the scoresheet himself, but his effort was tipped over after turning and swivelling inside the penalty area. They were to rue this missed chance as a Cambridge counter-attack sent Ieuan Lewis one-on-one, who guided a low shot into the far corner. City manager Gary Roberts made three substitutions in quick succession, and it was number 12 Kaan Fehmi who was having the most impact, sending a shot over and unleashing a sizzling effort which just evaded the far post. Brian Hughes brought on coach Jody Bevan late on in an attempt to win the game, but it was the away side who nearly snatched all three points after a free-kick just outside the box had Garner troubled.
After being knocked out of the FA Trophy, the Centurions can now focus on their league form, with their next match on Tuesday at Dorchester.
