With the new Premier League season a matter of days away here at Severn Sport we are rattling our brains around which players are in line for a good season. Those players who need a good season and those players who’s seasons are shaping up to be disasters. With that in mind we have decided to post a “Players to watch” series this week. That doesn’t necessarily mean players who are going to have a good or bad season. These are just players who we each feel need to have an eye kept on for various reasons. Today’s choices belong Matt Yates.
Here are my three players to look out for in the upcoming 2014/15 Barclays Premier League season. Three players who I think will be getting regular mentions and praise all season long. I have chosen a new arrival, a returning player and an existing premier league player in the premier league to keep and eye on when watching Gary the crisp man on match of the day.
I begin mine with a new arrival to the Premier league this season, a player who was one of the stand-outs from the summers World Cup and a fantastic signing for an already classy squad. Yes I’m talking about Arsenal’s 33 million pound summer signing, Alexis Sanchez. The 25 year old has spent the last 3 seasons in La Liga with European big dogs, Barcelona playing alongside and learning from the likes of Messi and Iniesta, not bad company there then, assisting his team mates to many goals and scoring 39 himself in his 88 appearances for the club. His performances at the 2014 World Cup helped his national side, Chile, to the round of 16 scoring 2 goals in the process and putting his name as one of the stand-out players of the cup. Now he’s at Arsenal I think this exciting player will set the premier league alight, linking up with the likes of Ozil, Giroud and the Ox and getting Arsenal those extra goals and extra attacking threat they need to push for the title.
My second one to watch is a player who returns to the premier league and back to the club who’s fans voted him their best player of all time. The most successful Ivorian footballer and Chelsea’s forth highest ever goal scorer, Didier Drogba, returns after a 2 season absence in search of Chinese glory with Shanghai and a bit of Turkish Delight with Galatasaray. The legend returns and fans will be hoping he brings his shooting boots back to Stamford Bridge with him. 100 goals in 226 appearances is an impressive statistic, winning the golden boot when Chelsea won the premier league and winning goals in both league and fa cup finals. At 35 many have said he isn’t going to be the same as he was, but with 15 goals in 36 appearances last season for the Turkish champions, he still has an eye for goal. He is another player you will hear a lot of this coming season and a man who can make things happen from nothing. He excites fans and there is a feeling there is always a chance to nick a goal if this man is on the field. With young stars around him such as Diego Costa and Eden Hazard he should flourish with support and assistance. Many goals to come from this man this season.
Finally I’m going to Merseyside for an Englishman who’s been in the Premier League since 2012, but really made an impact last season under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers. I’m talking about Liverpool’s 19 year old winger, Raheem Sterling. This guy is exciting to watch, whenever he gets the ball and starts running with it you can feel the atmosphere in the stadium lift and you always feel like something is going to happen. He joined Liverpool’s youth academy in 2010 from QPR and with in 2 years progressed up to the first team squad having his best season in 2013/14 helping the reds to their best premier league campaign for many years.
A reason I’m saying he is one to watch this season is after his World Cup performances. Arguably one of the only positives from England’s disappointing summer for me, he was one of the few players that wore the England shirt with pride and looked like he wanted to be there and try his best. He looks a fantastic product for the future England team and he’s shows that same passion and determination when playing for Liverpool. When ever he gets the ball he looks to run at players, get in the defenders faces, cut inside, cross the ball in and make things happen and generally just excites anyone watching. Without Suarez taking the limelight I have no doubt he will be one of Liverpool’s star men for this season. At just 19 though he will be a player to watch for the next few seasons.
