FGR playoff hopes dashed

FGR look to next season

Forest Green’s slim hopes of reaching the play-offs were ended on Saturday as they drew 2-2 at home to Woking in an exciting encounter, writes Alex Anderson.

FGR will now be looking to next season with promotion likely to be the aim after this year’s disappointment.

Woking looked the most promising side in the early stages and a few chances fell to Josh Payne and Scott Rendell but neither could convert.

Forest Green’s best chances early on were centre half EddieOshodi’s but he headed one over the bar and blazed the second after battling his way through the Woking defence.

Woking were seeing a lot of the ball at this point but FGR took the lead against the run of play as James Norwood broke the offside trap.

The pacey forward then rounded Woking keeper, SamBeasant, to tap the ball in to an empty net to put FGR one up.

Woking’s hopes seemed to take a massive hit as they went down to 10 men shortly after due to a straight red card for Mark Ricketts.

The Woking captain flew in on young Charlton Athletic loan signing Bradley Jordan and could have no complaints about his early bath.

In the second half Forest Green should have put the game to bed as they missed chance after chance with Matty Taylor, Lee Hughes and Danny Wright all failing to find the net.

And, Rovers were made to pay as they suffered a double blow, conceding to a close range finish from Brett Johnson and then losing Al Bangura as he received two bookings in quicksuccesion.

The game had majorly picked up at this point as both sides went for the win and it was Woking who thought they had it as John Goddard put them 2-1 up in the 90th minute after good play from Kevin Betsy.

There was one more twist in the tale though as in the dying embers of the encounter the ball fell to Lee Hughes at the back post who stooped and headed the ball past Beasant to steal a point for FGR.
