Gloucester City fans react after former club captain released

Gloucester City have confirmed the departure of central defender Sam Avery.

Avery, who came through the youth development at City had spells at Bishops Cleeve and Shortwood United amongst others before re-joining the first team in 2014.

From there Avery has been an integral part of the Tigers team in the National League North and South and has become a fan favourite during his 239 appearances for the club, winning the players’ and supporters’ player of the season at the end of the 2015/16 campaign.

However with new manager James Rowe looking to build a squad for the future and bringing in central defenders Liam Daly and Luke Pennell, chances have become limited for Avery and the departure was confirmed on Sunday evening by the club.

Along with Avery, the club have confirmed that former Port Vale winger Jennison Myrie-Williams has also left the club after originally joining in the summer.

Following the news City fans and even former players have taken to social media to question the decision to release Avery and whilst the overall reaction hasn’t been positive, there are many fans who acknowledge that the club are building for the future so are reserving judgment.

Severn Sport will be looking to speak to Avery and Gloucester City manager James Rowe as they both look ahead to the future, but what we know after Sunday’s announcement is that Avery’s future will not be with the Tigers.
