Hardwicke hit six to go six unbeaten in County League

Hardwicke made it six games unbeaten in the Gloucestershire County League this weekend, with a 6-2 victory at Patchway Town – having been a goal down.

Having been 1-0 down at half time former Slimbridge, Tuffley Rovers and Longlevens defender Kieran Squires levelled before Will’s Matthews and Higgins netted to put Hardwicke 3-1 up before the hour mark.

Tobie Webb grabbed a fourth before Patchway reduced the deficit back to two, but then Matthews and James Ratcliffe added further goals for Hardwicke, who moved up to 9th in the league with the win.

Manager Lee Chivers missed the game, but we caught up with assistant Tony Chivers who praised his side for coming back.

“It was very pleasing to win as the first 45 mins was probably the worst we have played this season!

We were lethargic and sloppy and the energy levels weren’t what we expected, but the way we played in the second half was very pleasing and anytime you score 6 you can’t be too disappointed,” said Chivers.

“We had a large percentage of the ball, but after going a goal down we tried to force things too much which led to attacks failing and the way the first half went it was vital that we got in at half time with damage limited to it just being 1-0.

Scott Eales didn’t have a lot to do in goal but we were giving them half chances with us having to make last ditch tackles and interceptions, words were spoken at half time about just relaxing don’t force things but to move the ball quickly on a very difficult pitch!

As soon as we equalised the lads grew in confidence and only looked like being one winner,” Chivers added.

As mentioned, Hardwicke are now six unbeaten in the league since their derby day defeat at Quedgeley Wanderers back in September having beaten sides in and around them as well as drawing with Sharpness and AEK Boko.

With a tough couple of games coming up against Frampton United and Gala Wilton, Chivers believes his side are capable of continuing their run and continuing to climb the table going into the Christmas period.

“Consistency is vital at any part of the season!” Chivers exclaimed. “We had a bad start to the season but credit where it is due the lads have continued to turn up every week determined to turn things around, they have knuckled down and slowly it has started to happen.

We don’t kid ourselves though as we know we have yet to beat anyone above us in the table, with our last 2 victories being against 10 men. We have a tough month ahead and it is vital we keep the standards and see where it takes us,” Chivers said.

Hardwicke’s next game sees them head to promotion chasing Frampton United on Saturday 23rd November.
