“We have a great chance” says Cinderford winger after FA Trophy winner

Cinderford Town’s match winner from Tuesday night Marley Thomas has called on his side to claim another scalp from a higher league, as they gear up for the visit of Potters Bar Town this weekend.

Thomas’ 117th minute in the Foresters manic 5-4 victory at Southern Premier side Merthyr Town on Tuesday saw his side make the Second Qualifying Round of the competition for the first time since 2010.

“It was a great game to play in and I was obviously buzzing to score the winner, but it’s what we deserved after overcoming a disaster of an opening 20 minutes,” said Thomas.

The opening 20 minutes Thomas is eluding to saw Merthyr fly out of the traps and take a 3-0 lead. However goals from Ethan Moore, Josh Hunt and Andy Lewis saw Paul Michael’s men level the tie before going behind again with just 10 minutes to go.

However a James Harding strike saw the game end 4-4 after 90 minutes and after stalemate at the Causeway on Saturday, the tie would go to an additional 30 minutes.

With penalties on the horizon the former Slimbridge and Sharpness man pounced on a ball in to win the tie and earn his side their place in the next round.

“When we was 3-0 down it looked like we had no chance and it was going to finish double figures,” Thomas said. “We didn’t start very well at all and Andy [goalkeeper Andy Hannah] also saved a penalty in this time, but after we settled down we were comfortable.

Ethan got us back Into the game just before half time from a scuffed Sam Turl cross and we always looked like we were going to go on and win from that moment,” added the winger.

And now Cinderford have earned their Second Qualifying Round tie, Thomas believes the Foresters can cause another upset when Potters Bar Town come to the Causeway this weekend.

“I honestly think we have a great chance of winning on Saturday. It’s another team in the league above which means it will be a tough game, but with the way the boys are playing we will fancy our chances massively,” Thomas said.
