Rovers revel in first home league win after running riot against Binfield

Tuffley Rovers picked up their first home league win of the 2019/20 season against Binfield on Saturday afternoon, after a blistering first half set them on their way to a comfortable 4-1 win.

There was an buzz of excitement in the air when the teams were announced, with Tuffley’s player of the year last season Kieran Alder back amongst the ranks, as he looks to make a comeback from injury at Cinderford Town.

And it was the former Gloucester City youth man who broke the deadlock on three minutes when Ross Langworthy’s shot was saved by Binfield keeper Joe Williams, giving Alder a simple tap in to continue where he left off for Rovers last season.

Alder would be in the thick of the action again just five minutes later when his free kick was glanced on by captain Macaulay Herbert, for the defender’s first goal of the season to make it 2-0 in no time.

Binfield slowly found their foothold in the game and after Asa Povey missed a glorious chance, forward Sean Moore thundered a header into the Tuffley net to deny them their first clean sheet of the season and to give Binfield a sniff.

That sniff faded just before the half hour mark though when Adam Bloomfield set up Langworthy for his 7th goal of the season for Rovers and to restore the hosts two goal lead going into the break.

There was still time for both Langworthy and Herbert to go close to their seconds, with Langworthy having his shot blocked by Williams and Herbert sending his headed effort off target.

The second half started slowly but it saw Langworthy nearly add a fourth, when his header was saved by Williams, despite calls that the ball had crossed the line…mostly from his opposite number Luke Merchant.

Alder would have the final say on his Rovers comeback though, with a delightful assist for Dom Kent to grab a deserved fourth goal for Tuffley.

The win moves Tuffley onto ten points and sees them move up to 12th in the Hellenic Premier, whilst Binfield miss the chance to move within four points of leaders Westfields.

Both sides move onto their Non-League Day fixtures next weekend, where Binfield head to Egham Town in the FA Vase and Tuffley host Holmer Green at Glevum Park.
