Participants set for Severn Sport Shield 2019

Severn Sport are delighted to announce the four participants for the 2019 edition of the Severn Sport Shield.

After the inaugural event at Slimbridge’s Thornhill Park, the Severn Sport Shield returns and this year we are heading to Glevum Park, the home of Tuffley Rovers.

Rovers will be joined by Hellenic Premier rivals Longlevens, Hellenic Division One West side Cheltenham Saracens and Gloucester City U18s for the four game tournament in July.

The knockout style tournament will see semi-finals played on Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th July, with the 3rd/4th place play-off and the final both being played on finals day on Saturday 14th July. Kick-off times and admission prices are subject to confirmation.

Severn Sport’s Ryan Butler has released a statement regarding the return of the summer tournament.

“Firstly, I am delighted that we have four sides in place for the tournament this season and they are four competitive sides that will be looking to lay down a marker for the 2019/20 season.

I will admit that the line-up for the tournament has changed more times than the Sugababes, but Kelsey and I understand that when the offers of lucrative pre-season friendlies come in you have to jump at them.

But having said that I am thrilled with the four sides we have in place. Obviously we knew Tuffley would be participating as hosts and with the facilities they have, I am sure the week will be another great advert for local football.

Longlevens are a club we have a great working relationship with and by having them in the tournament again, it dangles the carrot of a potential Hellenic Premier Derby like we saw in last year’s event.

Gloucester City were presented with the Severn Sport Shield in 2018 after a thrilling 4-2 win over runners-up Longlevens

Cheltenham Saracens were a club I unfortunately didn’t get to last season, but I know that they are one of the most exciting clubs in the county and have a number of players who know how to put on a show. Having spoke to Ryan Betteridge in the run up to this announcement, they were excited to be involved and we are just as excited to see what they can do!” Butler added.

“The last team is the Gloucester City U18s side. Kelsey and I were eager to have City in the line-up as defending champions and whilst we appreciate the first team’s commitments meant they couldn’t be involved, I pitched the idea of having the U18s side included in the event after a chat with the management board about the direction the club are going in and how the perception of the U18s side will be used similar to a Reserve side going forward.

We have four teams with young squads of players taking part in the tournament and we are proud to see the future of Gloucestershire Football taking part in our tournament.”

Tuffley Rovers Chairman Neil Spiller has also spoke to Severn Sport about the club hosting the Severn Sport Shield:

“We at Tuffley Rovers are absolutely thrilled to be invited to support Severn Sport by hosting the 2019 Severn Sport Shield.

We, like many other clubs in Gloucestershire, get huge support from Ryan, Kelsey and the team, so taking up the role of hosts is not only a privilege but also a fantastic opportunity to support them.

To start our pre-season with a competitive programme is great and I’m hoping that we can reward the Severn Sport guys with good hospitality, great football and some great support from the local community.

This should be a really competitive tournament and a great way to kick-off the 2019/20 season!” Spiller added.
