And just like that, it’s all over. Another Cheltenham Festival over for another year and what a day we saw to end it. From a tragic start to a shock in the big one, the day had everything…well, did it have many winners for our tipsters? Let’s see.
Going into the final day and the double points being dangled in front of our tipsters faces, we could have made a case for 8 of them to really mount a late challenge and take the crown of King Tipster. Let’s take a look at how they all got on, on what was a tough looking day of racing.
1.30pm – JCB Triumph Hurdle
1) Pentland Hills (20/1)
2) Coeur Sublime (20/1)
3) Gardens of Babylon (9/1)
Pulled Up: Sir Erec
The race will always be remember for an absolutely horrific broken leg suffered by the favourite Sir Erec. Ireland’s hotly fancied former flat runner landed heavily and that was that. A couple of place points were distributed but a lot of minus points hit us in the opener.
There were -2 points for all of Square Leg, Bacon, Sweet Prince, Knight Riders & Mr Slimbridge AFC. The trio of Last Chance Saloon, Always In My Brother’s Shadow & #Bouncebackers all scored -1 point for having a place in Gardens of Babylon.
The trio of The Fox, The Bear & The Tinkers all came away in the positive for this race after getting a place each and scoring 1 point each.
So an interesting way to start the day and a way to bunch everyone that little bit tighter at the top end of the table going into our second race.
2.50pm – Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle
1) Minella Indo (50/1)
2) Commander of Fleet (4/1 Fav)
3) Allaho (8/1)
Pulled Up: Rhinestone, Birchdale, Dinons, Stoney Mountain
As you can see, there were a few pulled up horses relevant to our tipsters – meaning more minus points to be issued.
There were – 2 points for all of Sweet Prince, Mr Slimbridge AFC and The Bear, with Knight Riders having a pulled up horse along with a place – scoring -1 point overall.
Only two other tipsters picked up anything from that race. Square Leg saw both his selections pull up by the final fence to take home -4 points, whilst Bacon tipped Commander of Fleet to place so earned 1 point.
And with that we had two final races where our tipsters could decide the title. Next, it was the big one.
3.30pm – Magners Gold Cup
1) Al Boum Photo (12/1)
2) Anibale Fly (22/1)
3) Bristol de Mai (18/1)
Awful. Absolutely 0 points scored across the 11 tipsters. All of our horses finished but none finished anywhere near the frame. Embarrassing really.
This meant that the Tipster League 2019 would go down to the final race!
4.10pm – Foxhunters Challenge Cup
1) Hazel Hill (7/2 Fav)
2) Shantou Flyer (7/1)
3) Top Wood (33/1)
Pulled Up: Caid du Berlais, Pacha du Polder
Again, more minus points to be issued – which could have a massive bearing on the final table! Let’s decipher the points after the Foxhunters.
The Fox, Bacon, Square Leg & The Tinkers all got through it unscathed, scoring 0 points.
The Bear picked up another place, scoring 1 point for his total.
Always In My Brother’s Shadow scored -2 points for having a pulled up horse, whilst Sweet Prince & #Bouncebackers also picked one – but had a placed each way shot to go with it. Both scored -1 points.
Knight Riders were horrendously unlucky. They picked the winner but used their extra place and BOTH their each way shots pulled up, meaning that despite picking a winner they also scored -1 point.
The only real winners of that race were Last Chance Saloon & Mr Slimbridge AFC who both had the winner, with the latter having the reversed forecast with Shantou Flyer. Last Chance Saloon scored 3 points, whilst Mr Slimbridge AFC went one better with 4 points.
And lastly, before the final table it is worth noting that Square Leg used his Ultimate Gamble in the last. The horse came second so no bonus points are added. So, to the final standings in the 2019 Severn Sport Tipster League.
Well well well, look at what we’ve got over here. The old Severn Sport team in 1st and 2nd places. The Tipster crown goes to Bacon who wins the league because he scored a better bonus points return than 2nd placed Last Chance Saloon, who enjoyed some retribution after usually being hit harder than that by the minus points for fallers.
The Tinkers, Tuffley Rovers duo Warren Mann and Joel White stayed consistent throughout the finish 3rd, whilst last year’s Ascot champion Mr Slimbridge AFC Colin finished just two points behind the leaders in 4th – something not to be sniffed at after a horrendous end to Day One for him.
Tipster League originators The Fox & Sweet Prince both finished on 14 points, with the latter slipping down the table after a bad final day. Bishops Cleeve duo and Tipster League debutants Freddy Ward & Adam Mace finished a respectable 7th and saw themselves finish in the positives on the bonus points.
Fellow debutants Knight Riders backed the most winners, but also the second most fallers/pulled up horses and were affected by a whopping -12 points throughout the week. After a bad first day and a score of -8 to overhaul, Always In My Brother’s Shadow finish 9th after a quiet final day.
The Bear was affected by Benie des Dieux falling on the first day and was always playing catch up whilst Square Leg…so that’s the Tipster League done for another year. Thank you for joining us over the week!
