Smith scores hattrick to claim first win as player/manager as Tredworth stun title challengers Charfield

Tredworth Tigers player/co-manager Lee Smith scored a hattrick as his side stunned title challengers Charfield 7-2, securing his first win in his new role in the process.

Former Gloucester City forward Smith, joined Tredworth in December to help co-manager Adam Dix’s side with his quality and experience, but started with a winless run of five games – two draws and three defeats.

Tredworth travelled to Charfield yesterday looking to cause a shock against the side one point off the top spot in the Stroud League Division One table.

A Smith hattrick and a goal apiece for Tyrese Sutherland, Lee Dyer, Geoff Llewellyn & Sam Roberts saw the Tigers hand out their very own mauling.

After the game, Smith spoke to Severn Sport about the result and his side’s performance.

“That was a great result. I’m glad to finally get my first win to take the pressure off slightly. I’ve told Severn Sport before and the lads that the win was coming and to do it against Charfield is great. Yesterday was a statement for sure.

We full deserved the win and obviously the scoreline is eye catching. But the lads deserved it for the lad they have stuck together. I’ve tweaked the squad with players in and out and I always believed the win was always going to come.

I told the lads after the game that they were class. I know I have ruffled a few feathers when I came in but the move was for the best. I am confident that the result will show that.”

Tredworth confirmed during the week that they had signed on former Tuffley Rovers midfielder Courtney Hamilton until the end of the season and it started rumours that the former Fairford Town and Tuffley Rovers forward would be going back to his former clubs for more recruits.

Smith however dismissed those rumours, for now anyway. When asked about anymore arrivals at Spa Road, Smith told us

“Not this season. We feel that we’ve brought in enough quality to stay up and maybe even make a late push for the 3rd spot with the top two so far away.

But next season we will take a look again and I will be looked to add a few more faces to make us title challengers next season.”

Tredworth Tigers host bottom placed Longlevens 3rds at Spa Road next Saturday before a double game weekend, with an away trip to Kingswood Reserves on Saturday 23rd February and a Presidents Cup Quarter Final against Leonard Stanley at Spa Road on Sunday 24th February.
