Cleal to use squad in County Cup Quarter Final whilst looking to win GFA Trophy

Bishops Cleeve manager Stephen Cleal will be looking to utilise the strength and depth of his squad in Tuesday night’s GFA Trophy Quarter Final tie against Roman Glass St George.

The Mitres will be going into the game on the back of three wins in a row and Cleal admitted to us that whilst the league is still the priority, he will be looking to finally land the County Cup as manager.

“The aim at the start of the season as we all know was to gain promotion back into the Southern League and that is still our number one priority. But when you have a squad of players who all want to play it is important to keep people fresh and on their toes, as well as hungry, so we always consider that when selecting the team.

As a manager I’ve always viewed cup games as a chance to try things and give players a chance and not really take them too seriously until the latter stages when you think about winning the trophy.

The last time we were in the Quarters of the County Cup we ended up being beaten finalists against Forest Green and it is a competition I have never won as a manager, having lost two finals. With Brimscombe winning it last year it would be great if we can follow that up ourselves.”

Cleal, who has been defeated in the final of the County Cup as manager of both Bishops Cleeve & FC Barometrics, will be expecting a tough game from Tuesday’s Western League opposition.

“Every game we research the opposition and the lads are giving information about them, so tomorrow it will be no different. It will be a tough game for sure and some people might have us as slight favourites, but I am sure they will be coming to win the game and will fancy their chances.

Hopefully, as many Mitres fans as possible will be down at Kayte Lane to cheer the boys on in what should be an entertaining game.”

Since knocking Stonehouse Town out in the last round of the GFA Trophy, Roman Glass St George have only won out of the last eight games- a 2-0 win at home to Gloucestershire side Shortwood United.

The winner of Tuesday’s Quarter Final tie at Kayte Lane will go on to play the winner of Almondsbury vs Bitton in the Semi Finals, with the other Quarter Final also taking place on Tuesday night.

Bishops Cleeve vs Roman Glass St George in the GFA Trophy kicks off at 19:45 on Tuesday night at Kayte Lane.
