Six goals but very little quality as Holmer Green hold Tuffley to 3-3 draw

Tuffley Rovers played the role of the big bad wolf as they huffed and they puffed but failed to blow the Holmer Green house down, as the High Wycombe based side held on for a 3-3 draw at Glevum Park.

Rovers got off to the perfect start, with Kieran Alder crossing for Shayne Bradley to slide in the opener with just 45 seconds on the clock.

Bradley stepped up to curl a free kick straight at Holmer Green keeper Aaron Brown ten minutes in, as both sides struggled to retain possession and really get into any sort of rhythm.

Dean Munday had a shot held by Kane Winman with Holmer’s first shot on target before Kieran Alder went down the other end and curled wide for Tuffley.

Just before the half hour mark Alder was muscled off the ball before Mark Pritchett gave away a free kick 20 yards from goal. Curtis Stone stepped up to curl a glorious free kick into the top corner, beating Kane Winman’s despairing dive.

Tuffley restored their lead within three minutes as Jack Phillips went down in the area as a free kick was swung in. Holmer Green were up in arms over the decision but referee Kieran Dolphin was 100% sure. Shayne Bradley stepped up to send Brown the wrong way and put Tuffley 2-1 up.

The game had a mad end to the first half with Tyreece Briscoe & Dean Powles squaring up after the Cheltenham Town loanee had brought down the Holmer Man.

Within seconds Adam Riley was played in on goal, only to slip after lifting the ball over the on-rushing Winman.

Kieran Alder was then sent one on one after a quick free kick, only to fire past brown and wide in a glorious chance for the hosts.

Rovers were made to pay for their missed chances when Elliot Britton volleyed home from inside the box after Winman punched clear a Holmer corner.

After going in level at the break the visitors were to take a 3-2 lead early in the second half. As Tuffley failed to clear the ball and retain possession in their own half, a cross from the left was headed home by Powles.

Bradley and Alder both had tame efforts saved by Brown before Tuffley equalised just before the hour mark. After Tuffley broke the ball was played from right to left, leading to Bradley drilling the ball in. Defender Munday couldn’t sort his feet out and he could only slice the ball into his own net.

As Tuffley went in search of a winner they brought on Warren Mann and Brett James to stretch the Holmer defence. Will Dawes saw his header saved before Alder had another glorious chance saved by Brown as the hosts turned the screw.

Mann nearly won it but his effort summed up Tuffley Rovers’ luck this season. After being slipped in on the left side of the box, his shot was saved by Brown, only for the ball to then loop up and rebound off the crossbar.

Both sides are in Hellenic League Supplementary Cup action next weekend, with Tuffley Rovers travelling to Brackley Town Saints whilst Holmer Green host Yateley United.
