This weekend marks the opening fixtures for 2019 in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League and we begin with two table topping clashes.
In Division One unbeaten Chalford host Sharpness whilst Whitecroft travel to Woolaston in Division Two, as Saturday’s fixtures give us the top 2 squaring off in each division.
Sharpness who have lead Division One since near enough day one will be the latest side looking to end Chalford’s unbeaten start, whilst extending their lead at the top of the table to 6 points.
In Division Two it is all about closing the gap for Whitecroft, who will start the afternoon 8 points the leaders Woolaston, who can extend their lead into double digits.
Ahead of the fixtures in “Super Saturday” we spoke to Chalford manager Ben Powell before Christmas and we looked ahead to Saturday’s showdown. Powell played it cool regarding the game.
“I think the last three games against Sharpness have all been draws so we know we are in for another tough game against them. Obviously if we came away with a win it would stand us in good stead for the second half of the season.
But what we have to remember is that leagues aren’t decided in January and we know there are plenty of tough fixtures to come in the New Year and if we want to be in and around the top come the end of the season then we need to perform well in all of them.” Powell told Severn Sport.
A win tomorrow will see Chalford move to joint top with this weekend’s opponents, but they will still have three games in hand over Sharpness.
Along with Powell, we also spoke to Woolaston manager Andrew Wenzel about his side’s strong start to the season and he too talked about taking the run in one game at a time. Wenzel said to us,
“It’s very important for us to keep building momentum. Each game is like a cup final but we can’t afford to be side tracked on what the other teams are doing around us.
Yes, we know teams are waiting for us to slip up but all we can do is concentrate on ourselves and keep on winning our games.”
Chalford vs Sharpness & Woolaston vs Whitecroft both kick off at 14:00 on Saturday 5th January.
